During the off peak season, you will see travel agencies in Spain advertising loads of inexpensive trips to fabulous destinations with the term IMSERSO. You might ask yourself: Who is IMSERSO? And why are these trips so cheap? And how do I get some of that sweet inexpensive travel action?
IMSERSO or the Instituto de Mayores y Servicios Sociales is a Spanish government agency that oversees subsidized holidays for retired residents in Spain. During the off-peak season, from October to June, inexpensive holidays are made available to resident pensioners in Spain, whatever their nationality.
There are many different destinations available, everything from Benidorm to Ronda to Santiago de Compostela plus the Balearics and Canary Islands usually in 3 or 4 star hotels. These trips typically include transportation to the destination, full board in a double or single room, travel insurance, entertainment, more. You can bring a travel companion and they don’t need to be a pensioner.
If you are retired, claiming a pension and are a resident of Spain, you may qualify. You must be registered with the program in order to be able to book IMSERSO trips. Stop by your local travel agency to ask for assistance with registering and booking travel.
